Nigeria Government

Nigeria is a federal republic, with executive power exercised by the president. ... Nigerian politics takes place within a framework of a federal, presidential, representative democratic republic, in which executive power is exercised by the government. Abacha, Sani (1943-1998), a Nigerian Army general, seized the presidency of Nigeria in a military coup in 1993 and ruled the country as head of a military dictatorship until 1998.In 1983, in a military take-over led by General Mohammed Buhari, Abacha became commander of the 2nd Mechanized Division and a member of Nigeria's Supreme Military Council. He went on to become a major general in 1984. Soon after becoming president, Abubakar dismissed several of Abacha's associates from various key government posts, released political prisoners, and promised an early transition to civilian democracy. He also gave indications that he would soon release Chief Moshood Abiola, whom Abacha had imprisoned in 1994 after annulling elections that Abiola had won.
